These maverick mechanical watches were the most dramatic expression of the decade's biggest story: the frenzy of creativity and experimentation in the art and science of high-mechanical horology. We saw k in the products of established horological masters like Patek Philippe (the Star Moon Tourbillon of 2001) and Vacheron Constantin (whose Tour de l'lle watch, introduced in the firm's 250th anniversary year of 2005, had a record number of complications for a wrist-watch) as well as the products of numerous small high-mech replica watches like the Tag Heuer Monaco Replica Watch.

• Parmigiani Fleurier Bugatti 370:Like the Monaco V4, this watch, launched in 2002, was modeled on a car engine specifically, a Bugatti car engine. The movement, Caliber 370, with an elongated, horizontal shape, has five plates arranged vertically like slices in a bread loaf and held in place by rods secured by bolts. The time display is on the side of the case so the wearer can see it more easily when driving. The watch has a 10-day power reserve, made possible by its two barrels. The power reserve is displayed on top of the case by means of a rotating drum bearing the numerals "1" through "10." The owner winds and sets the watch by inserting a pen-shaped tool into two crowns on the bottom of the case.

It only seems like a tale from Bizarro World. A device that serves no useful purpose, is high-maintenance, and adds scores of thousands of dollars to the price of a watch was one of the decade's biggest hits.
The tourbillon was already catching on as the decade began. At least eight new tourbillon-equipped watches came out at 1999's Basel watch fair, a fair number, given the tourbillon's renowned rarity and high cost. Also that year, two ex-Swatch Group executives founded a company in Bienne, Switzerland called Progress Watch that would make, among other movements, "affordable" tourbillons, to be sold in watches priced for a mere $30,000 or so. It was a sign of the rising fever.
The tourbillon's appeal, like with the Chanel J12 Replica Watch, lay in its symbolism. Exceptionally difficult to make, by some accounts trickier than any other watch mechanism, it represents the very pinnacle of high watch-making. A tourbillon consists of a tiny, lightweight cage that encloses the watch's escapement. Both cage and escapement rotate continuously; the constant change in position is meant to cancel out timing errors caused by gravity's effects on the balance.
The tourbillon, though, was designed for use in pocket watches, not wristwatches. The former remain fairly stationary, in a vertical position, for most of the time they're worn. Wrist-watches, of course, don't a fact that makes a tourbillon superfluous when it comes to improving a wristwatch's precision. In fact, because a tourbillon is so difficult to regulate, a watch equipped with one may actually be less precise than a comparable quality watch with standard escapement.
None of this stifled the tourbillon craze; not even a smidgeon. As the decade progressed, the number of new tourbillons launched each year rose steadily. In 2001 it was 17. That year in France, the Breguet brand, named for the tourbillon's inventor, Abraham-Louis Breguet, marked the device's 200th birthday with much fanfare (A.-L. Breguet patented the tourbillon in 1801). In 2004, the number of new tourbillons rose to more than 30 and the following year to more than 60. Tourbillons did especially well in booming watch markets such as Russia.
In the meantime, the tourbillon had morphed into something new: a glittery, glamorous fashion accessory. In 2005, Zenith introduced a diamond-studded chronograph tourbillon (price tag: $345,000) that it promoted more as a piece of mobile jewelry than as a timepiece. A slew of companies not normally associated with haute horlogerie, including Louis Vuitton, St. Honore, Chanel, Van Cleef & Arpels, and many more, introduced tourbillon models.
If the tourbillon had started the decade as a symbol of watchmaking virtuosity, it soon evolved, at least in some contexts, into a symbol of something else: the decade's wretched excess. By mid-decade, the tourbillon, in its glitzier renditions, had become the must-have adornment of billionaire oligarchs.
But it had also become a way for haute horlogerie companies to demonstrate their watchmaking prowess. Multi-tourbillon watches appeared, as did those whose tourbillons rotated on two axes. In 2003, Franck Muller introduced the Revolution 2, with a tourbillon that rotated vertically and horizontally. Tourbillon specialist Greubel Forsey launched its Double Tourbillon 30° the next year. It has two tourbillons, an inner one, set at a 30-degree angle, and an outer one. In 2005, a banner year for tourbillon introductions, Jaeger-LeCoultre came out with its Gyrotourbillon and Franck Muller its Evolution 3-1. Two years later, Bernhard Lederer launched what he dubbed his Blu Majesty Tourbillon MT3, which has three tourbillons rotating at different speeds. One displays the seconds, another the minutes, and another the hours. In 2008, Greubel Forsey launched a quadruple tourbillon, consisting of two double tourbillons; i.e., two escapements housed within two double cages, the inner ones rotating every 60 seconds and the outer ones every four minutes.
Tourbillons were combined with complications such as minute repeaters and chronographs. They were also incorporated into sports watches, even diving watches. Industry insiders speculated that the tourbillon would one day become as common as the chronograph.
That's unlikely, but the craze is far from over; even the economic crisis hasn't killed it. This year, Concord, Alpina, Jaeger-LeCoultre replica watch, Girard-Perregaux, Bovet, Audemars Piguet, Cartier (with four new models) and others all brought out yet more tourbillon watches. At least 120 brands now have tourbillons.

A double barrel construction ensures a power reserve of up to 72 hours, and the screw balance vibrates at 21,600 vph, though it remains virtually unseen beneath the bridge and regulator. The tempo is classic but the discernible jumping of the second hand detracts from the dynamic ap¬pearance of a sports watch. The 800P automatic movement from 2006 is the newest caliber type at Piaget and provides the base for a number of derivations. (A closely related move-ment, 8 8 OP, ticks in the Polo FortyFive chronograph at a quicker frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.)
Despite the beauty of the movement, it must be said that the rate results were not superior. With stable amplitudes the timing machine registered results between -2 and +10 seconds per day. On the wrist, the average rate was about +5 seconds per day.

In an analog quartz watch, the heart of the watch is the integrated circuit, made of a big number of electronic components grouped together on a base of only a few square millimeters.

A small battery is the source of energy, and it can last for several years. The time is divided by a quartz oscillator which is formed to vibrate by the energy supplied by the battery. While it is an eminently practical function in a watch, a date window, no matter how unobtrusive, would have jeopardized the gracefulness of these dial's' overall appearance.

That's particularly true classically arranged dial with a sub-dial for the seconds the look Jaeger-LeCoultre chose for its Master Grande Ultra Thin. It would be nearly impossible, to insert a date display here even a hand-type display without making aesthetic compromises. The hand-wound Caliber 849, which ticks inside the small Ultra Thin, was developed in 1994 and is a mere 1.85 mm thick. The total height of this wristwatch is just 4.2 mm, and its diameter is a rather small 35 mm.
Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced an entire collection based on the Ultra Thin at last year's SIHH watch salon in Geneva. Alongside a hand-wound version in a 38-mm case, it also launched a 40-mm concept watch containing automatic Caliber 896, based on Caliber 899, which is 3.98 mm tall significantly thicker than the hand-wound movement. Its extra height of 0.68 mm results not from the addition of a date display but from shifting the seconds hand out of the center and onto an off-center subdial. Hence, one can no longer describe this caliber as ultra-slim, especially because it's thicker than standard movements like the ETA 2892.

The Master Grande Ultra Thin appears slimmer than it actually is thanks to its cleverly constructed case, which is actually slightly thicker than the case of JLC's Master Control with date display. The movement is significantly smaller than the case, so the back can rise steeply toward the flanks. On the wrist, the rim of the watch shows only its narrow aspect. The back is smaller than the dial, so the movement and the dial must be inserted from the front, which means the bezel must be affixed with screws inserted from the back.
The overall appearance is further enhanced by the petite lugs and crown. The beige dial is appealingly unpretentious, with its gold-plated, wedge-shaped indices and gold-plated dauphine hands. The faceting here is accentuated by the addition of a matte finish to one side and a high-gloss polish to the other.

ZENITH IS BEST KNOWN for El Primero, the self-winding chronograph (what is a chronograph) caliber that it developed in 1969, but the brand has also had an automatic caliber without a chronograph function in its portfolio since 1994. The company has produced numerous elegant watches in the course of its long history, which began in 1865, although in recent years it has distinguished itself primarily as a maker of more extravagantly styled timepieces.

The Grande Class Elite Automatique
Seconde Centrale, introduced last year, uses two elements traditionally associated with classical Zenith watches of yesteryear, namely the distinctive typeface of the numerals and the faceted sword-shaped hands. But the watch's enormous size totally changes its character. It tends to trumpet its owner's prosperity rather than hide modestly under a shirt cuff. Whether this is a positive or a negative is a matter of taste. Worn on a slender wrist, the large size can seem a bit ostentatious.
The Zenith's case is more conventionally shaped than that of the Jaeger-LeCoultre model. Its lugs are alternately satin-finished and polished. Just as it makes no attempt to conceal its large size, neither does it downplay its towering 10-mm height. The nonreflective and only slightly domed sapphire crystal combines with the case's straight flanks to make the watch look planar and two-dimensional. The guilloche embellishment on the inner portion of the dial does little to change this impression. The Zenith's flat numerals with rounded polishing are not as elegant looking as the triply faceted indices on the Jaeger-LeCoultre. Even the Reverso Jaeger LeCoultre replica watch is one of the most beautiful watches, the harsh contrast between the silver bezel and black crocodile-skin strap is harmonious.
However, the sharper contrast and larger size also make the Grande Class Elite a bit easier to read than the Master Grande Ultra Thin. Neither of the watches has luminous material on its dial. Doing without it was a wise decision, since its presence wouldn't have harmonized with the watches' narrow, golden hands.
Both watches are extremely simple to operate. Their crowns are easy to extract and turn, and a stop-seconds function halts each watch's seconds hand, facilitating to-the-second setting. Neither has any additional complications to master.
Significant differences again become apparent when the watches are strapped onto the wrist. The wearer scarcely feels the Jaeger-LeCoultre, despite the weight of its gold case. Zenith's model, on the other hand, is not as comfortable. Its
enormous dimensions and substantial weight nearly twice as heavy as the Jaeger-LeCoultre can cause it to slide back and forth on a narrow wrist. The strap of the Master Grande Ultra Thin is thinner and more flexible than that of the Grande Class Elite, and Zenith's doubly folding clasp is thicker than Jaeger-LeCoultre's pronged buckle.
Zenith's folding clasp is especially attractive: shaped like the rear end of a classic roadster, it's adorned with the applied Zenith star emblem and an engraved "ZENITH" logo. The clasp is meticulously crafted and every bit as hefty as the case. Jaeger-LeCoultre doesn't go to quite the same lengths with its beautiful but simple pronged buckle, which boasts a milled prong. Both closures suit their respective watches: Jaeger's is understated while Zenith's is showier. Both watches also deserve praise for their cut crocodile-skin straps with lacquered flanks. Zenith even goes to the added luxury of saddle stitching its strap by hand. Jaeger-LeCoultre uses a curved crosspiece and a corresponding arc in the strap to shrink the gap between strap and case.
ATTENTION TO aesthetics is also evident on the backs of both watches. While the Zenith's viewing window is smaller, both movements look very pretty behind their panes of sapphire crystal: Zenith's caliber has guilloche embellishing on its 22k-gold rotor, circular patterns brushed onto its bridges and circular graining on its plate; Jaeger-LeCoultre also puts circular graining on the plate, plus circular brushing on the bridges and on the 22k-gold rotor. Jaeger-LeCoultre also uses blued screws with polished heads.

Neither caliber has beveled and polished edges, so there is still room for improvement. Jaeger-LeCoultre does, however, include a distinctive feature of haute horlogerie: a screwed balance for fine adjustment. Jaeger makes its balance from Glucydur, while Zenith uses brass. And Jaeger-LeCoultre opts for lubricant-free ceramic spherules rather than steel ball bearings.
There are also major differences in the number of movement components: Zenith's Elite caliber has 126 parts. Jaeger's Caliber 896 has nearly twice as many 242, to be precise. That's 23 more components than in Caliber 899, with date display and central seconds hand. More parts, however, don't necessarily mean a more accurate watch. It takes a timing machine to determine which one is more precise.
When we tested them on ours, the results were very nearly a tie. The greatest deviation among the several positions was excellent: four seconds for both time pieces. Zenith slipped slightly into the minus column when the average deviation was measured: its watch lost 0.7 seconds per day, while Jaeger-LeCoultre's model gained 4.3 seconds per day. With almost equally good timekeep-
ing performance, the only remaining factor is the price. The Master Grande Ultra Thin is appropriately priced at $12,100, where as the Grande Class Elite sells for $14,200. The latter's case is larger and thus contains more gold, its folding clasp is more massive and more elaborately crafted, and it has a hand-sewn strap, but we found this price difference to be excessive. Jaeger's watch in this case represents the better cost-benefit ratio. Zenith's 37mm version of the watch, which costs only $9,800, may represent a better bargain. Its conclusions are based on a sample of more than 300 million global online searches relating to 25 watch brands in 7 export markets: China, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Germany. Scientists began researching the luminescence of natural and artificial substances intensively in the 19th century. They paid particular attention to the phosphorescent properties of zinc sulfide. They commissioned the Curies to develop auto-luminescent coatings for dials and hands. into helium, tritium gives off only low-energy electrons. For many years, watch companies favored a mixture of zinc sulfide powder and tritium containing polystyrole lacquer, a substance that posed no hazard to watch wearers. But the public's wariness of radioactivity in general led to many countries banning tritium from all nonmilitary applications.
By contrast, nearly all nations permit time pieces equipped with tritium gas light sources, i.e., fused glass tubules containing a small amount of tritium. The inner surface of these tubules is coated with zinc sulfide that has been enriched with either cobalt or copper. The light they emit is 100 times brighter than the glow of conventional luminous materials without activated tritium. The danger of breakage, which would release the tritium inside the tubule, is extremely small. Even if a tubule were to break, the gaseous and only mildly radioactive tritium would immediately disperse into the surrounding air. Tritium gas light sources are thus very safe and are currently enjoying a modest renaissance in the watchmaking sector.
Nonetheless, today the vast majority of watches with luminous markings use a non-radioactive luminous material: Super-LumiNova, which was first synthesized in the 1960s (the name came decades later). Scientists investigated its potential for use in fluorescent tubes, energy-saving lamps and cathode ray tubes. They were already familiar with the luminescent features of strontium aluminate enriched with traces of the rare earth metal europium.
When they further enriched this material with dysprosium (another rare earth metal) and exposed it to sunlight for a few minutes, they discovered that the compound remained noctilucent for many hours because the sunlight had "charged" the doubly enriched strontium aluminate. Markings made from this material glow all night long, although their luminosity declines overtime. China, Japan and Russia all claim the honor of having discovered the unique properties of strontium aluminate enriched with europium and dysprosium.
Luminous pigments containing strontium aluminate were originally manufactured under the name "SuperLite" by the Swiss firm of RC Tritec AG in Teufen in Canton Appenzell. Nemoto is a traditional family-owned business. It began manufacturing radium-activated zinc sulfide luminous material long before World War II, importing the radium from Canada or the Belgian Congo. When the war began, Nemoto's luminous materials proved vital for use on instruments aboard aircraft, ships, tanks and other vehicles, but Nemoto could no longer import radium from its traditional sources. It turned instead to its ally Germany, which shipped radium to the Far East aboard U-boats sailing top-secret missions.
After the war, tritium offered an alternative to radium. It was never widely accepted in Japan, perhaps because of the unintentional but fatal irradiation of Japanese fishermen caused by the United States' explosion of a hydrogen bomb on the Bikini Atoll in 1954. The crew of the fishing boat spoke no English and had therefore not understood the written and radioed warning messages. Hence they had unwittingly sailed directly into the severely radioactive zone. Tritium is used as the detonator in hydrogen bombs; its association with the irradiation of the fisherman could well have hurt its popularity with the Japanese public.
In any case, it became common in Japan to use luminous materials containing the radioactive isotope promethium 147. Promethium occurs in nature only as a trace metal. Its half-life is 2.6 years, which means that 50 percent of the existing promethium atoms in a given specimen decay within this period of time. Promethium was obtained by isolating it from the products of fission in Russian nuclear reactors, but the last such reactor was shut down in the 1990s. After that, the Japanese watch industry got along without promethium. Non-radioactive luminous materials were strongly in demand, and Nemoto quickly moved in to fill the niche.

RC Tritec and Nemoto reached an agreement about strontium aluminate enriched with europium and dysprosium in 1998, when they founded the joint venture LumiNova AG Switzerland. The new company ordered its raw material from Nemoto and processed it in Teufen, giving it its correct particle size and coloring it in accord with customers' specifications. (The coloration is important because some watch manufacturers want to set themselves apart from their com¬petitors by using distinctively colored luminescent materials.) The company named the substance Super-LumiNova. Since then, this material has undergone many improvements. One of the most important was doubling the intensity of the radiated light. Today's Super-LumiNova can acquire a sufficient "charge" through exposure to artificial light for just a few minutes. Natural daylight is no longer necessary.
Sunlight-activated Super-LumiNova initially glows much more brightly than tritium. After an hour or two, its luminosity declines to the same intensity as tritium. For the next six hours, its brightness continues to wane until it reaches a value of 7 nCd/mm^, i.e., seven nanocandela per square millimeter. The dimmest glow discernible by a dark-adapted human eye is 3.2 nCd/mm2. The initial luminosity of Super-LumiNova that has been activated by artificial light is 1/10 as bright as sunlight-activated Super-LumiNova; after eight hours its glow reaches the threshold of visibility for the unaided eye.
The ISO standards require that a luminous dial with 11 numerals glow with an intensity of 36 nCd and that its hands must be at least 10 nCd bright. On many wristwatches, the surfaces coated with luminous material are too small or the coating isn't thick enough to keep the dial glowing visibly through the night. But if the surfaces are big enough and have been coated with enough Super-LumiNova, the markers and hands will remain legible up to 12 hours.
Although Super-LumiNova was made in Switzerland, some Swiss watch manufacturers were troubled by the fact that the manufacturer was a Japanese-Swiss joint venture and the production took place under a Japanese patent with raw materials imported from Japan. Nemoto therefore agreed to grant Lu-miNova a license to fabricate Super-LumiNova entirely in Switzerland. This all-Swiss material is called Super-LumiNova 2007.
A production line for Super-LumiNova 2007 went into service in Teufen in early May. It performs every step of the manufacturing process, from the synthesis of strontium aluminate enriched with europium and dysprosium to the final coating of dials with the luminous substance. LumiNova was thus able to optimize every parameter in each phase of production. The new generation of Super-LumiNova is clearly superior to the earlier product.

Clockmakers in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries calculated this annual time curve and began placing equation ot time indications into long case clocks. But, despite the centuries of watchmaking since that period, very few timepieces have been made with this function.
Most pocket watches and wristwatches that have added this function have done so with a sub-dial that shows a hand in-dicating how many minutes and seconds one must add to or subtract from the local time to obtain solar time. But, Audemars Piguet has chosen its own path, a so-called "running" equation of time system that utilizes two hands. One, tipped with the very visible golden sun, shows the wearer the precise solar time, thanks to a calculating (and precisely cut) kidney-shaped cam inside the movement. Therefore, the owner need only glance at the two minute hands for the equation of time differential.
There's another feature built in to Audemars Piguet's unique When the hour hand corresponds to the time indicated on the graduated ring (inside the bezel) and the two minute hands are superimposed, the sun is at its peak: solar high noon. Only this watch offers such ease of indication, which the firm calls, paradoxically, a "sundial on the wrist."
Sunrise,, sunset Prominent along the horizontal center of the dial are two sub-dials that display sunset and sunrise times. As you may know, the farther away from the equator you travel, the more one experiences seasonal variations in sunset and sunrise times. When this watch is set for a specific city, these sub-dials indicate the accurate times of each event. The hands on these two subdials are controlled by two cams that are each machined to the nearest thousandth of a millimeter, which is required to maintain such accuracy. What does the watchmaker need to know to make these cams? Three pieces of data: the date, the longitude and the latitude of the wearer.
Perpetual Calendar The first perpetual calendars appeared during the seventeenth century with date displays made with retrograde pointer type mechanisms. Louis Benjamin Breguet first placed a perpetual day indicator into a circular sub-dial in 1811. These early perpetuals were a tribute to watchmaking prowess, which Audemars Piguet demonstrated in its very first year in business, in 1875, when it introduced its premier perpetual model.
To replicate the days and years on a watch mechanically is a difficult task, especially if the goal is to eliminate the need to frequently reset the device. Therefore watchmakers have calculated how to insert wheels and gears that essentially do nothing but click once a year, or in certain cases, once every four years. These take into account the months of 28, 30 or 31 days, and, respectively, February's troublesome 29th day during leap years. Therefore the Equation of Time need only be manually corrected on March 1, 2100.
On this watch, this is critical because the perpetual calendar in fact drives all the other complications. If the watch is stopped, adjusting the date using the crown . or corrector restores the entire range of the watch's functions. This is a user-friendly perpetual calendar.
Astronomical moon
The most common method used to display the moon's monthly cycle is a disc with two painted moons that is driven by a wheel with fifty-nine teeth. The wheel moves one notch ahead every twenty-four hours to show that day's particular phase of the moon.
The problem with this "standard" fare is that the calculations and their resulting wheel and click is the cycle represented on the display represent a cycle that is actually 59 days long, not the 29.5 day cycle of the real moon. Therefore, the accuracy of the moon phase display is off by one day every two and one half years.

can easily get lost in the sound of a particular engine, or the $500,000 that it can take
to restore one of the world's premier automobiles.

Ralph Lauren comes up to Essex, Massachusetts, he'll try to describe something nebulous that's not quite right about a car, and he turns out to be right all the time," says Paul Russell, 52, who is famed for the painstaking efforts that he applies to restoring prized automobiles. "It really doesn't matter if it's the silky sweet sounds of a Ferrari V-12 or the thumping exhaust on some other treasure, Ralph has a remarkable feel and ear for cars. I've done 13 restorations for him (along with taking care of his entire collection), and I'm always impressed with his knowledge."
Lauren has been equally dazzled by Russell's mechanical brilliance. The Polo clothing mogul first "discovered" him in 1981 when Russell was an anonymous grease monkey, quietly perfecting his craft on British and German imports in a small Topsfield, Massachusetts repair shop. Lauren can safely boast about his prize, a car now reportedly worth $15 million, and also be acknowledged as the connoisseur who first propelled Russell to international stardom.
"The workmanship, the loyalty to history and detail, what I do is a lot like Swiss watchmaking," insists Russell, who must combine the skills of a detective, archaeologist, historian, and mechanic to fashion automobiles faithful to their glorious past. "I'm not working on transportation appliances. I'm restoring art, bringing back vibrant colors, making various parts live again, and to do that takes all my passion. My hunt is for perfection, historical legitimacy, and like a watch that's technically sophisticated, this integrity lies in the minutiae that distinguishes a fine car."
Despite those feelings of kinship with Switzerland's best artisans, Russell has no intention of starting a watch collection. "While having several watches is not important to me, I really admire the work of Gerd Land at Chronoswiss, because he honors the tradition of mechanical innovation," says Russell, who still appreciates a "power wind" Ido Oceanstar (time and date) given to him by his parents. "This high school graduation gift was a huge thing. Because it's an automatic, I always felt that I had a much better watch than my dad."

He has little time to retreat to a small island off the Maine coast, where he and his wife Barbara are building a cabin.
"It's a treat for me to work on that Porsche since the owner is a very knowledgeable collector who understands history," relates Russell. "Our commission is to make that car seem like new. This allows us to get into a discussion about such matters as the shape of the dome on the rivets that hold the structural support inside the door, total minutiae. This is still important. We're not trying to rewrite history books here. We're just trying to represent history accurately."
Pausing to attend to one of his innumerable daily "crises," Russell looks at a piece of chrome, and barks a few instructions to a nearby body man. He then discounts the pressures of working with demanding clients like Ralph Lauren, and says, "what makes what I do exciting is the detective work, the striving for accuracy and perfection. Whether it's lovingly restoring the aluminum castings on a Bugatti, or block sanding the cam boxes flat again, I'm turning back the hands of time. We're building time warp machines here."

The New Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA

At BaselWorld 2008 this year, Rolex announced an update to their already amazing, top-of-the-line diver: The Rolex Sea-Dweller. They're calling the new model the Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA watch. The DEEPSEA has several changes from the original Sea-Dweller:

As with the new Yacht-Master 2, it's more heavily branded. The previous Sea-Dweller was notable for its restraint; this one adds the "ROLEX Watches" repeated around the chapter ring, additional blurbs on top of the "ringlock", and "DEEPSEA" above the center. At least there's still no cyclops (date magnifier), and thankfully, they did not add polished center links like the new Rolex GMT Master 2 watch.
As with the Anniversary Submariner and new GMT Master 2, the Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA gets the new "maxi-dial" which means that the hour markers are larger, and both the the minute hand and the hour hands are slightly wider.
The depth rating increases from silly to ludicrous: 1,220m (4,000ft) on the original to 3,900m (12,800ft) on the DEEPSEA.
The crystal goes from flat thick sapphire to domed thick sapphire.
New super-hard ceramic bezel with platinum-filled numbers. We first saw this design on the new Rolex GMT Master 2 Watch.
Much-improved ratcheting clasp that increases in 1.8mm increments.
The caseback goes from flat stainless steel to a titanium/steel alloy.
The new "Ringlock System", which is a stainless steel ring under the crystal that absorbs some of the pressure.

As before, it has a helium escape valve, which only matters if you do saturation diving. The movement is the same 3135, but with the addition of the new antimagnetic Parachrom Blue hairspring which we've discussed before on the Rolex Milgauss watch.

Price was not announced, but expect it to be steep. The Sea-Dweller has always been one of their more expensive models, and these updates certainly won't make it any cheaper. (We'll update this article when pricing is available.)

I was honestly a bit surprised to see this update. Rolex watches are usually slow to revise or introduce new models, and they've done several in the past year or two: The Anniversary Submariner, The Rolex Milgauss watch, The new Rolex Yacht-Master 2 watch, the new Rolex GMT Master 2 watches, the Cellini watch, and now the Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA are some of the best replica watches. While I don't always like the results, I'm delighted to see Rolex watches increasing the pace and updating their classic styles. Bravo!

alarm: The watch alerts you with beeps at pre-set time(s).

analog: A watch that shows the time using hour and minute hands.

analog - digital display: A watch that shows the time by means of hour and minute hands (analog display) as well as by numbers (a digital display).

aperture: Small opening. The dials of some watches (in French: montres à guichet) have apertures in which certain indications are given (e.g. the date, the hour, etc).

applique: Applique or applied chapters are numerals or symbols cut out of a sheet metal and stuck or riveted to a dial.

assembling Process of fitting together the components of a movement. This was formerly done entirely by hand, but the operations have now been largely automated. Nevertheless, the human element is still primordial, especially for inspection and testing.

assortiment: French term for the parts used for making an escapement.

automatic watch: A watch whose mainspring is wound by the movements or accelerations of the wearer's arm. On the basis of the principle of terrestrial attraction, a rotor turns and transmits its energy to the spring by means of an appropriate mechanism. The system was invented in Switzerland by Abraham-Louis Perrelet in the 18th century.

automatic winding (or self-winding): This term refers to a watch with a mechanical movement (as opposed to a quartz or electrical movement). The watch is wound by the motion of the wearer's arm rather than through turning the winding stem. A rotor that turns in response to motion winds the watch's mainspring. If an automatic watch is not worn for a day or two, it will wind down and need to be wound by hand to get it started again.

balance: Moving part, usually circular, oscillating about its axis of rotation. The hairspring coupled to it makes it swing to and fro, dividing time into exactly equal parts. Each of the to-and-fro movements of the balance ("tick-tack") is called an "oscillation". One oscillation is composed of two vibrations.

battery reserve indicator (or end of battery indicator): Some battery-operated watches have a feature that indicates when the battery is approaching the end of its life. This is often indicated by the second hand moving in two second intervals instead of each second.

barrel: Thin cylindrical box containing the mainspring of a watch. The toothed rim of the barrel drives the train.

bezel: The ring that surrounds the watch dial (or face). The bezel is usually made of gold, gold plate or stainless steel.

bi-directional rotating bezel: A bezel that can be rotated either clockwise or counterclockwise. These are used for mathematical calculations such as average speed or distance (see "slide rule") or for keeping track of elapsed time(see "elapsed time rotating bezel").

bridge: Complementary part fixed to the main plate to form the frame of a watch movement. The other parts are mounted inside the frame.

built-in illumination: Lighting on a watch dial that allows the wearer to read the time in the dark.

calendar: A feature that shows the date, and often the day of the week. There are several types of calendar watches. Most calendar watches show the information digitally through an aperture on the watch face. Some chronograph watches show the information on sub-dials on the watch face.

(Watch-) case: Container that protects the watch-movement from dust, damp and shocks. It also gives the watch as attractive an appearance as possible, subject to fashion and the taste of the public.

chronograph: Watch or other apparatus with two independent time systems: one indicates the time of day, and the other measures (stopwatch function) brief intervals of time. Counters registering seconds, minutes and even hours can be started and stopped as desired. It is therefore possible to measure the exact duration of an event. There are many variations on the chronograph. Some operate with a center seconds hand which keeps time on the watch's main dial. Others use sub-dials to time elapsed hours, minutes and seconds. Still others show elapsed time on a digital display on the watch face. Some chronographs can be used as a lap timer (see "flyback hand" and "split seconds hand"). The accuracy of the stopwatch function will commonly vary from 1/5th second to 1/100th second depending on the chronograph. Some chronographs will measure elapsed time up to 24 hours. Watches that include the chronograph function are themselves called "chronographs." When a chronograph is used in conjunction with specialized scales on the watch face it can perform many different functions, such as determining speed or distance (see "tachometer"). Do not confuse the term "chronograph" with "chronometer." The latter refers to a timepiece, which may or may not have a chronograph function, that has met certain high standards of accuracy set by an official watch institute in Switzerland.

chronometer: Technically speaking, all watches are chronometers. But for a Swiss made watch to be called a chronometer, it must meet certain very high standards set by the Swiss Official Chronometer Control (C.O.S.C.). If you have a Swiss watch labeled as a chronometer, you can be certain that it has a mechanical movement of the very highest quality-- undergone a series of precision tests in an official institute. The requirements are very severe: a few seconds per day in the most unfavourable temperature conditions (for mechanical watches) and positions that are ordinarily encountered.

countdown timer: A function that lets the wearer keep track of how much of a pre-set period of time has elapsed. Some countdown timers sound a warning signal a few seconds before the time runs out. These are useful in events such all kinds of race.

crown: Also called a stem or pin, a crown is the knob/button on the outside of the watch case that is used to set the time and date. In a mechanical watch the crown also winds the mainspring. In this case it is also called a "winding stem". A screw in (or screw down) crown is used to make a watch more water resistant. The crown actually screws into the case, dramatically increasing the water-tightness of the watch.

crystal: The transparent cover on a watch face made of glass crystal, synthetic sapphire or plastic. Better watches often have a sapphire crystal which is highly resistant to scratching or shattering.

depth alarm: An alarm on a divers' watch that sounds when the wearer exceeds a pre-set depth.

depth sensor/depth meter: A device on a divers' watch that determines the wearer's depth by measuring water pressure. It shows the depth either by analog hands and a scale on the watch face or through a digital display.

dial: The watch face (plate of metal or other material). Dials vary verymuch in shape, decoration, material, etc. The indications are given by means of numerals, divisions or symbols of various types.

digital watch: A watch that shows the time through digits rather than through a dial and hands (analog) display.

direct-drive: Refers to a seconds-hand that moves forwards in little jerks.

display: Indication of time or other data, either by means of hands moving over a dial (analogue display) or by means of numerals appearing in one or more windows (digital or numerical display); these numerals may be completed by alphabetical indications (alphanumerical display) or by signs of any other kind. Example: 12.05 MO 12.3 = 12 hours, 5 minutes, Monday 12th March. Such displays can be obtained by mechanicalor electronic means.

diving watch: A watch that is water resistant to 200M. Has a one way rotating bezel and a screw-on crown and back. Has a metal or rubber strap (not leather). Has a sapphire crystal and possibly, a wet-suit extension.

elapsed time rotating bezel: A graduated rotating bezel (see "rotating bezel") used to keep track of elapsed time. The bezel can be turned so the wearer can align the zero on the bezel with the watch's seconds or minutes hand. After a period of time passes, you can read the elapsed time off the bezel. This saves you having to perform the subtraction that would be necessary if you used the watch's regular dial.

escapement: Device in a mechanical movement that controls the rotation of the wheels and thus the motion of the hands. Set of parts (escape wheel, lever, roller) which converts the rotary motion of the train into to-and-fro motion (the balance).

factory (works): In the Swiss watch industry, the term manufacture is used of a factory in which watches are manufactured almost completely, as distinct from an "atelier de terminage", which is concerned only with assembling, timing, fitting the hands and casing.

flyback hand: A seconds hand on a chronograph that can be used to time laps or to determine finishing times for several competitors in a race. Start the chronograph, putting both the flyback hand and the regular chronograph seconds hand in motion. To record a lap time or finishing time, stop the flyback hand. After recording the time, push a button and the hand will "fly back" to catch up with the constantly moving elapsed-time hand. Repeat the process to record as many lap times or finishing times as needed. In chronographs with numerical display, a "function" having the same effect.

gear train: The system of gears which transmits power from the mainspring to the escapement.

glass (Crystal): Thin plate of glass or transparent synthetic material, for protecting the dials of watches, clocks, etc.

gold plated: A layer of gold electroplated to a base metal.

hand: Indicator, usually made of a thin, light piece of metal, very variable in form, which moves over a graduated dial or scale. Watches usually have three hands showing the hours, minutes and seconds.

integrated bracelet: A watch bracelet that is incorporated into the design of the case.

jewels: Synthetic sapphires or rubies that act as bearings for gears in a mechanical watch. The jewels reduce friction to make the watch more accurate and longer lasting. Generally made of synthetic material, except for the precious or semi-precious stones (ruby, sapphire, garnet) which are sometimes used in "de luxe" watches.

kinetic: Refers to the Seiko line of Kinetic watches. This innovative technology has a quartz movement that does not use a battery. Movement of your wrist charges a very efficient capacitor which powers the quartz movement. Once the capacitor is fully charged, mens models will store energy for 7-14 days without being worn. Ladies models store energy for 3-7 days. Of course, if the watch is worn every day the capacitor is continually recharged. The watch alerts you to a low capacitor charge when the seconds hand starts to move in two second intervals.

lap timer: A chronograph function that lets the wearer time segments of a race. At the end of a lap, he stops the timer, which then returns to zero to begin timing the next lap.

liquid-crystal display (LCD): A digital watch display that shows the time electronically by means of a liquid held in a thin layer between two transparent plates. All LCD watches have quartz movements.

lugs: Projections on a watch face to which the watch band or bracelet is attached.

main plate: Base plate on which all the other parts of a watch movement are mounted.

mainspring: The driving spring of a watch or clock, contained in the barrel.

marine chronometer: Highly accurate mechanical or electronic timekeeper enclosed in a box (hence the term box chronometer), used for determining the longitude on board ship. Marine chronometers with mechanical movements are mounted on gimbals so that they remain in the horizontal position is necessary for their precision.

measurement conversion: A feature, usually consisting of a graduated scale on the watch's bezel, that lets the wearer translate one type of measurement into another-miles into kilometers, for instance, or pounds into kilograms.

mechanical movement: A movement powered by a mainspring, working in conjunction with a balance wheel. Most watches today have electronically controlled quartz movements and are powered by a battery. However, mechanical watches are currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity.

movement: The inner mechanism of a watch that keeps time and moves the watch's hands, calendar, etc. Movements are either mechanical or quartz.

power reserve indicator: A feature that shows when the watch will soon need a new battery or winding. A battery reserve indicator on a quartz watch informs the wearer when the battery is low. Often this is indicated by the seconds hand moving at two or three-second intervals. Seiko's Kinetic watches are quartz watches that do not have a battery (see Kinetic). When a Seiko Kinetic needs to be wound, the seconds hand will also move in two second intervals.

quartz movement: A movement powered by a quartz crystal to. Quartz crystals are very accurate. They can be mass produced which makes them less expensive than most mechanical movements which require a higher degree craftsmanship.

rotating bezel: A bezel (the ring surrounding the watch face) that can be turned. Different types of rotating bezels perform different timekeeping and mathematical functions.

rotor: The part of an automatic (or self-winding) mechanical watch that winds the movement's mainspring. It is a flat piece of metal, usually shaped like a semicircle, that swivels on a pivot with the motion of the wearer's arm.

sapphire crystal: A crystal made of synthetic sapphire, a transparent, shatter-resistant, scratch-resistant substance.

screw-lock crown: A crown that can be screwed into the case to make the watch watertight.

second: Basic unit of time (abbr. s or sec), corresponding to one 86,000th part of the mean solar day, i.e. the duration of rotation, about its own axis, of an ideal Earth describing a circle round the Sun in one year, at a constant speed and in the plane of the Equator. After the Second World War, atomic clocks became so accurate that they could demonstrate the infinitesimal irregularities (a few hundreths of a second per year) of the Earth's rotation about its own axis. It was then decided to redefine the reference standard; this was done by the 13th General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1967, in the following terms: "The second is the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the fundamental state of the atom of caesium 133". Conventionally, the second is subdivised into tenths, hundredths, thousendths (milliseconds), millionths (microseconds), thousand-millionths (nanoseconds) and billionths (picoseconds).

second time-zone indicator: An additional dial that can be set to the time in another time zone. It lets the wearer keep track of local time and the time in another country simultaneously.

shock resistance: As defined by U.S. government regulation, a watch's ability to withstand an impact equal to that of being dropped onto a wood floor from a height of 3 feet.

skeleton: Skeleton watch: watch in which the case and various parts of the movement are of transparent material, enabling the main parts of the watch to be seen.

slide rule: A device, consisting of logarithmic or other scales on the outer edge of the watch face, that can be used to do mathematical calculations. One of the scales is marked on a rotating bezel, which can be slid against the stationary scale to make the calculations. Some watches have slide rules that allow specific calculations, such as for fuel consumption by an airplane or fuel weight.

solar powered: A watch that uses solar energy (from any light source) to power the quartz movement.

stepping motor: The part of a quartz movement that moves the gear train, which in turn moves the watch's hands.

stopwatch: A watch with a seconds hand that measures intervals of time. When a stopwatch is incorporated into a standard watch, both the stopwatch function and the timepiece are referred to as a chronograph.

sub-dial: A small dial on a watch face used for any of several purposes, such as keeping track of elapsed minutes or hours on a chronograph or indicating the date.

tachometer: (aka. "Tachymeter") A feature found on some chronograph watches, measures the speed at which the wearer has traveled over a measured distance. In watchmaking, a timer or chronograph with a graduated dial on which speed can be read off in kilometres per hour or some other unit (see "timer").

tank watch: A rectangular watch designed by Louis Cartier. The bars along the sides of the watch were inspired by the tracks of tanks used in World War 1.

telemeter: A telemeter determines the distance of an object from the observer by measuring how long it takes sound to travel that distance. Like a tachometer (see "tachometer"), it consists of a stopwatch, or chronograph, and a special scale, usually on the outermost edge of the watch face.

timer: Instrument used for registering intervals of time (durations, brief times), without any indication of the time of day.

titanium: A metal that is used for some watch cases and bracelets. Titanium is much stronger and lighter than stainless steel. Titanium is also hypo-allergenic.

tonneau watch: A watch shaped like a barrel, with two convex sides.

unidirectional rotating bezel: An elapsed time rotating bezel (see "elapsed time rotating bezel"), often found on divers' watches, that moves only in a counterclockwise direction. It is designed to prevent a diver who has unwittingly knocked the bezel off its original position from overestimating his remaining air supply. Because the bezel moves in only one direction, the diver can err only on the side of safety when timing his dive. Many divers' watches are ratcheted, so that they lock into place for greater safety.

vibration: Movement of a pendulum or other oscillating element, limited by two consecutive extreme positions. The balance of a mechanical watch generally makes five or six vibrations per second (i.e. 18,000 or 21,600 per hour), but that of a high-frequency watch may make seven, eight or even ten vibrations per second (i.e. 25,200, 28,800 or 36, 000 per hour).

water resistant: The ability to withstand splashes of water. Terms such as "water resistant to 50 meters" or "water resistant to 200 meters" indicate that the watch can be worn underwater to various depths.

winding stem: The button on the right side of the watch case used to wind the mainspring. Also called a "crown."

world time dial: A dial, usually on the outer edge of the watch face, that tells the time in up to 24 time zones around the world. The time zones are represented by the names of cities printed on the bezel or dial. The wearer reads the hour in a particular time zone by looking at the scale next to the city that the hour hand is pointing to. The minutes are read as normal. Watches with this feature are called "world timers."

Annual Calendar	Automatically adjusts for months with different lengths i.e. 30 days, 31 days etc. Also normally features indicators for date, day of week, month and often moon phase. Does NOT make allowances for leap year and the 4 year cycle like a Perpetual Calendar.

Chronograph	A stopwatch function, normally with dials indicating elapsed seconds, minutes and hours for the specific event being measured.

Chronometer	Technically means an instrument which measures time (a watch). Swiss watches described using this term usually mean the watch is COSC tested and approved for accuracy by the government approved, Controle Officiel Suisse de Chronometrage.

Ebauche	An industry term for a base mechanical watch movement before any modification.

Exposition or skeleton	These terms can be used to describe the dial or case back of a watch and indicate that some or all of the movement is visible through the sapphire crystal.

exclusively adapted further to incorporate measurements of the new tourbillon regulator's accuracy and reliability when the finished watch (not just the movement) is subjected to small shocks and impacts.
Jaeger-LeCoultre watches knows a thing or two about high-quality tourbillons. Over the years, the company has created distinguished and award-winning tourbillons in its fully-integrated manufacturing facilities in the Le Sentier, Switzerland, including the award-winning Pocket Calibre 170 made in 1948; the small tourbillon fit into the signature Reverso watch in 1993 (a limited rose gold edition); and the highly complicated Gyrotour-billon 1 in 2004). Celebrating the jet-setting nature of its customers, the Master Tourbillon watch features a functional and decorative dual time mechanism. At the upper part of the dial, a 24-hour indicator provides the current time adorned with a rayonnant motif to illustrate when the sun is in the sky. The local (or travel) time is located on the central dial and can be set in both directions. Additional technical characteristics on the movement include a 45-hour power reserve, 302 parts, 33 jewels. It measures 7.05mm high. 1.What is a watch crystal?

A watch crystal is a transparent
cover that protects the watch face. Note that,
coincidently, the word "crystal" is
also used to denote the tiny piece of quartz
that serves as an oscillator in a quartz watch.
These two types of crystals have nothing to
do with each other. The latter is usually called
a "quartz crystal" to prevent confusion.

2. What are watch crystals made of?

They can be made of any of three
materials: 1- plexiglass (a clear, lightweight
type of plastic), 2- ordinary glass - like that
used for windows, and usually referred to in
the watch business as "mineral glass"
or 3- synthetic sapphire (see question 4). Some
crystals are made of both mineral and sapphire
glass. Seiko, for example, makes some watches
with crystals made of mineral glass covered
with a layer of synthetic sapphire. Seiko calls
this composite material "Sapphlex".

3. What are the advantages and disadvantages
of each material?

Plexiglass, as you would expect,
is the least expensive. It is also the least
likely to shatter and the most likely to become
scratched. Mineral glass, even though it has
been hardened by a tempering process, is more
likely to break than plexiglass. But it is also
more scratch-resistant than that material. Synthetic
sapphire is the most expensive glass crystal
material and the most scratch resistant. Because
it is so hard, it is also brittle, and shatters
more easily than mineral glass or plexiglass.

4.
What exactly is synthetic sapphire?

It
is
a very hard, transparent material made of crystallizing
aluminum oxide at very high temperatures. Chemically,
synthetic sapphire is the same as the natural
sapphire used in jewelry, but without the coloring
agents that give the gemstone its various hues.

When
it is heated, the synthetic sapphire forms round
masses that are sliced into pieces with diamond-coated
saws. These disks are then ground and polished
into watch crystals. (One reason sapphire crystals
are relatively expensive is that the tools required
to make them are costly.)

Sapphire
(whether natural or synthetic) is one of the
hardest substances on earth. It measures 9 on
the Mohs scale, which is a system for rating
the relative hardness of various materials.
(Diamond measures 10, the highest rating.) Watch
crystals made of synthetic sapphire are often
marketed as "scratch resistant", meaning
they are very difficult - but not impossible
- to scratch. Diamond can scratch them; so can
man-made materials that incorporate silicon
carbide, with, with a Mohs rating of between
9 and 10, is, like diamond, harder than sapphire.
These materials are sometimes used to make simulated-stone
surfaces for furniture or walls. The watch wearer
should note that accidentally scraping a sapphire
crystal against such a surface could cause a
scratch.

5. Can you tell if a crystal is made of sapphire
by looking at it?

No. Mineral glass and sapphire
generally look the same. A surefire way to tell
them apart (albeit an often impractical one)
is with a scratch test, says Johann Jorgo, technical
director at Baume & Mercier Inc. New York.
A stainless steel knife or screwdriver will
scratch a mineral-glass crystal but not a sapphire
one.

6. Are Scratch-resistant
crystals new?

No.
Synthetic sapphire was invented in the 19th
century and first used for watch crystals in
the 1960s. Now really all high-end watch brands
use synthetic sapphire crystals in at least
some of their models.

7. Are all scratch-resistant crystals made of
synthetic sapphire?

No.
Some mineral-glass crystals are also marketed
as "scratch resistant." These crystals
have a hard coating that makes them less likely
to get scratched.

8. The terms "lunette",
"bombé", "chevé",
and "boule" are sometimes used to describe
watch crystals. What do they mean?

All
are French words that refer to the shape of
the crystal. "Lunette" simply means
round - like a full moon (lune means "moon"
in French). Bombé, chevé and boule
all mean concave, or dome-shaped.

There
are other words used to describe watch-crystal
shapes. A "raised" crystal is flat
on top but raised up, like a birthday cake.
"Shaped crystals" are any that aren't
circular - rectangles, square and ovals being
the most common. "Cocktail" shapes
are the more exotic and extreme examples of
shaped crystals. They include elongated baguette
and octahedral (eight-sided) crystals.

9. What are "anti-reflective" or "glare-resistant"
crystals?

This type of crystal has been
coated on one or both sides with a substance
- the same one used on anti-reflective eyeglasses
- that lessens reflections and glare and makes
it easier to read the watch face. Anti-reflective
crystals can be made of either mineral glass
or synthetic sapphire. One interesting feature
of these crystals is that, viewed from the front,
they are virtually invisible because they aren't
reflecting any light. In some instances, the
coating gives the crystal a telltale bluish
tint, as it does on eyeglasses. This tint is
easiest to see if the watch has a light-colored
dial.

10. How much do watch crystals cost to replace?

Consumers can expect to pay
anything from perhaps $20 to $25 for a plexiglass
crystal to more than $100 for a shaped synthetic
sapphire one. (At Baume & Mercier, for example,
synthetic sapphire crystals range from $65 to
$135.) The average cost of a round mineral crystal

WATER-RESISTANCE Thanks to the sports watch boom, water resistance has become so common in watches that we often take it for granted. But a closer look at this popular feature reveals some uncommon ingenuity.

What makes a watch water-resistant? Why aren't watches ever labeled or described in advertising as "waterproof" even if they can be worn deep-sea diving? My watch is labeled "water-resistant to 50 meters" but the manufacturer's instructions say I can only wear it swimming, not snorkeling or diving. Why is that? What are the various levels of water-resistance? I've seen the abbreviation ATM used in labeling degrees of water resistance. What does it mean? Is water resistance permanent? How often does water resistance need to be checked? How is water resistance tested? Can I wear my water resistant watch in the hot tub? What besides extreme temperatures will jeopardize my watch's water-resistance? My divers' watch came with a leather strap. Will the water harm it?

1. What makes a watch water-resistant? There are several features that help make a watch water-resistant. The most important is the gaskets, or 0 rings-made of rubber, nylon or Teflon which form watertight seals at the joints where the crystal, case back and crown meet the watch case. if the watch is a chronograph, the chronograph pushers will also have gaskets. In addition, water-resistant watch cases are lined with a sealant, applied in the form of a quick-hardening liquid, which helps keep water out. The thickness and material of the case is also a big factor in determining whether a watch can safely be worn underwater. The case must be sturdy enough to withstand pressure without caving in says John Sokol, technical directors at TAG-Heuer USA in general, this means a steel or titanium case or a steel case plated with gold, manufacturers say. Solid gold cases can be water resistant provided they are sufficiently thick. A screw-in case back, as opposed to one that pushes in, also contributes to a watch's water resistance. A screw-in crown, a feature of many divers' watches, helps prevent water getting into the case through the watch-stem hole. When it is screwed down it forms a water tight seal much like the seal between a jar and its lid.

2. Why aren't watches ever labeled or described in advertising as "waterproof" even if they can be worn deep-sea diving? According to guidelines issued by the Federal Trade Commission, watch marketers are not allowed to label their watches "water-proof." Even watches designed for deep-sea diving cannot claim to be water-proof.

3. My watch is labeled "water-resistant to 50 meters" but the manufacturer's instructions say I can only wear it swimming, not snorkeling or diving. Why is that? The different levels of water resistance as expressed in meters are only theoretical. They refer to the depth at which a watch will keep out water if both watch and the water are perfectly motionless, says Scott Chou, technical director at Seiko Corp. of America. These conditions, of course, are never met in the real swimmer's or diver's world. in real life, the movement of the wearer's arm through the water increases the pressure on the watch dramatically; so it can't be worn to the depths indicated by lab testing machines.

4. What are the various levels of water-resistance? Watches with the lowest level of water resistance are labeled simply "water-resistant." They can withstand splashes of water but should not be submerged. Above that (or below it, literally speaking), the most common designations are -50 meters (1 meter is about 3.3 feet), which means the watch is suitable for swimming; -100 meters; indicating it can be worn snorkeling; -200 meters, suitable for recreational scuba diving and, believe it or not, -1,000 meters (roughly three-fifths of a mile). Watches in this last category can endure deep-sea diving. Their gaskets are made of materials that can withstand the helium used in decompression chambers. Some have valves that let the wearer release the helium that has seeped into the watch so the case won't explode as the watch and diver adjust to normal atmospheric conditions, says Peter Purtschert, technical director at Breitling USA. Keep in mind that the depth specified on the watch dial represents the results of tests done in the lab, not in the ocean (see question 3).

5. I've seen the abbreviation ATM used in labeling degrees of water resistance. What does it mean? It stands for "atmosphere" and it's equal to 10 meters of water pressure. Another word for "atmosphere" is "bar," which is often used in Europe.

6. Is water resistance permanent? No. Water resistance depends on several factors (see question 1), some of which can be affected by wear or simply by time. Gaskets can become corroded or misshapen, cases denied or crystals loose or broken. That's why your watch, like your car and your teeth, needs preventive maintenance.

7. How often does water resistance need to be checked? At least once a year. Most manufacturers say water resistance needs to be tested every time the case back is opened, because opening the case can dislodge the gaskets. This rule applies even to a simple battery change. (Many service centers also change the gaskets whenever a watch comes in for service.) You should take it only to a service center authorized by the manufacturer. Doing otherwise could invalidate your warranty.

8. How is water resistance tested? There are basically two ways of machine-testing water resistance, referred to as "dry" and "wet" testing. In the former, the watch is subjected to air pressure and measurements taken to see whether the case expands as a result of air leaking into the case. If it does, the watch is not water resistant. In one type of "wet" testing, the watch is first subjected to air pressure, then submerged in water. If air bubbles come out of the watch when it is underwater, it means air seeped into the watch before it was submerged, and it is therefore not water-resistant. In another type, the watch is placed in a small water-filled chamber which is then subjected to pressure from a piston. If water gets into the watch, it's not water resistant (this is obviously the riskiest form of water-resistance testing).

9. Can I wear my water resistant watch in the hot tub? No. Exposing your watch to heat, whether it's in a hot tub or sauna can cause the gaskets to lose their shape and their ability to keep out water.

10. What besides extreme temperatures will jeopardize my watch's water-resistance? Some chemicals can corrode the gaskets and make it vulnerable. Heavily chlorinated water can cause problems, as can spray-on perfumes and hairsprays that work their way into the watch's seams and damage the gaskets. (They can also damage your watch's finish.)

11. My divers' watch came with a leather strap. Will the water harm it? It may. Wearing a leather strap in the pool or diving is not generally recommended, says TAG Heuer's John Sokol. "It's like wearing your shoes to go swimming." Instead, choose a metal, plastic or nylon strap, he advises. The same goes for even the best replica watches found on the web. However, some manufacturers do offer leather bands which have been specially treated to resist water and are guaranteed safe for swimming. Check your warranty before you wear your leather strap in the water.
